Canon information

Character name and canon: Darcy Lewis, MCU Thor
Character background: Actual best character in Thor (apart from all the others).

Voidville information

Character's Voidville name: Casy Wilder
Voidville background: Casy works at Gilbert's tavern, where she makes good tips tending bar, because she's a huge flirt. She's got a degree in accounting that she never used until she realised Gilbert isn't 100% certain that 1 + 1 = 2, so she also puts on her glasses and does the books. She's a lot smarter than she lets on most of the time.

Voidville information

Character's Voidville name: Caprice Sesto
Voidville background: Caprice is not a native of Voidville, but rather moved to town to get away from the stress of city life, following a nervous breakdown some years ago. The quiet life suits her, though it hasn't cured all that ails. She appears to be fairly absent-minded, often caught up in her own little world. Chalk it up to a short attention span.

Officially, Caprice's diagnosis is schizophrenia, which she doesn't share that with anyone. She sees her doctor regularly and takes her medication, but doesn't respond to treatment the way she's expected to. Sometimes she still sees and hears from people who aren't there. This doesn't keep her from living a "normal" life, however. She's better with machines than she is with people, operating a repair service out of her home. She'll fix your vacuum, your furnace, that rattling noise in your car. She's really good with toasters. Regardless of her reputation for being "not all there," Caprice is friendly enough and gets along, even if her propensity to zone out mid-conversation is rather awkward.

Canon information

Character name and canon: Red Riding Hood
Character background: Since she was little, she has been Red Riding Hood, a cloak-wearing girl with remarkable abilities that came into being with adolescence, and a twin brother who could run faster than anyone else; in accordance with the fairy tale Marvel book she featured in, her developing powers were observed by a witch queen there in the mountains. In late adolescence, she was pursued by a wolf-man who was drawn by her nascent witchcraft and entrance into adulthood. She's also been called Scarlet Witch, but that moniker came about when she and her brother were saved from the dangers of a place called Transia by a huntsman and sorcerer, who turned out to be less awesome than described and also their father. They fought back against him, eventually resulting in his imprisonment, leaving them free for the first time in their lives.

Voidville information

Character's Voidville name: Wanda Magnus
Voidville background: Wanda and her twin brother are Romani Kosovar immigrants who survived the wars of the Balkans in the 1990s and were briefly part of a terrorist cell in their teenage years, led by their biological father. They came to the island in their late teens and are quite close, though Wanda's definitely the friendlier of the two, with a love of things like tarot cards and playfully tormenting menfolks with her wiles. She and her brother do not talk about their background, the wars, or what it is that prompted them to come to a tiny island in Maine; while they don't live with her, they have a grandmother on the island (who is not actually a blood relative, but nobody knows that), named Agatha. She babysits, pet-sits, and works in various bars (she can bartend or serve, prefers to bartend), rotating her shifts in order to take advantage of whatever place's best tipping hours, and will take any opportunity to dance with a customer. She can also translate Latin for money, but that's...seldom really been necessary. That bit of knowledge is sort of at odds with the mysterious broke drifter aspect of the rest of her. She feels things more than she really remembers her past- she knows she's done bad things, knows she feels this guilt, but doesn't always remember why.

She has a strong desire to help people, to try to make up for some of the things she's done - and she's got a soft spot for the underdog. This does not mean she does not have a temper. In town she's often kind of a "fixer" personality, someone to secretly go to if you have a problem and feel desperate: people trapped in scary marriages, if you think your kid's running with a bad element, if you got in over your head, etcetera. She keeps people's secrets nearly as well as she keeps her own. Wears a lot of very tiny corsets.

Canon information

Character name and canon: Le Petit Poucet
Character background: Once upon a time a little boy saved his sister by outsmarting an ogre. While the ogre was sleeping, he stole the its seven-league boots, which gave him the power to take strides seven leagues in length, making him very fast. As the twins grew up, they went on other adventures involving various witch queens, his sister's magical awakening, and a sorcerer who turned out to be their father, who they fought and eventually imprisoned.

Voidville information

Character's Voidville name: Pietro Magnus
Voidville background: Pietro immigrated from Kosovo to Voidville with his sister, Wanda, when they were in their late teens, ostensibly to be closer to their "grandmother," Agatha. In truth, they were former members of a terrorist cell run by their biological father, whose influence they are determined to escape. Pietro worked odd jobs at first, including a stint as a sandwich delivery boy, but after a positive experience with the Voidville PD, he set his somewhat starry-eyed sights on law enforcement. To that end, he got his GED and has taken a few criminology classes at the local community college if there is one (??), or alternatively an online school before the internet died out. For the past mumblemumble timeframe he's been working as a park ranger, to give him something to put on his application for police academies. When he's not busy roaming the paths and yelling at people about minor violations of park regulations, he can be found being unnecessarily helpful at the local police department or occasionally hanging around bars where his sister works, trying not to get into fights with everyone who looks at her twice.

Pietro is a generally unfriendly, high-strung dude prone to overreaction who sometimes maybe has a lot of feelings about justice and protecting people, while paradoxically having kind of a chip on his shoulder about authority. His antics are frequently loud, predictable, and embarrassing, earning him kind of a reputation and not many friends. Or no friends. His extreme protectiveness has been known to extend to a few people outside his sister on occasion, however, and underneath his abrasiveness, he is generally an upstanding (if tragically earnest and overly sensitive) guy. While neither he nor his sister ever talk about their lives before Voidville, Pietro's level of dedication to his work nevertheless makes it seem like he's trying to atone for something.

Canon information

Character name and canon: Penta, variation of The Girl With Silver Hands
Character background: This is one of those really fucked up fairy tales, but it's kind of perfect for the character's backstory. TW for sexual abuse/incest, self-mutilation.

An adaptation of the Aarne-Thompson Folktale 510B, in which a King's wife dies and he vows to only marry a wife as beautiful as she was. The only marriagable girl who meets this qualification is his eldest daughter, Penta, who mutilates herself to escape her father's advances and make herself ineligible for his plans, going so far as to cut off her hands. Her father has her thrown into the sea in a chest, but the chest is retrieved in a different land by a fisherman, whose jealous wife brings Penta to the King, claiming she is a devilish spirit. Instead of executing her, the king there makes Penta his Queen's lady-in-waiting, and when the Queen becomes ill, she asks the King to marry Penta in her place upon her death, which is what he does. While he is away hunting, the fisherman's wife, Nuccia, tampers with the letters between the couple, making it seem as though the King wants Penta to be killed. Concluding he has gone mad, her husband's advisors hide her away in a land ruled by a magician, who teaches her the arts in exchange for her story (he was holding a "who can tell the shittiest life story" competition, not even kidding...and yes, she won).

Penta subsequently wages a bloody war of revenge on Nuccia, the jealous fisherman's wife, and then her own father. When she burns her father alive, her hands spontaneously reappear, causing her silver hands to fall off. She throws them into the sea. When her husband returns, however, he does not believe she is his wife, because her hands are in their natural form and she has no scars, and has her banished. Penta, realizing that he loved her no less because of her disfigurement, dives down to the bottom of the ocean in order to obtain her silver hands, which she presents to her husband as proof of identity. Somehow this works and he doesn't go "uh are you sure you aren't a changeling who just ripped off my actual wife's silver hands", because idk it's a fairytale.

Voidville information

Character's Voidville name: Carolina Mendez
Voidville background: TW for sexual/physical abuse.

A counselor at the local high school (and sometimes attached to the clinic), focus is in holistic sexual health, though she can also do family therapy; she has a music theory background, but that wasn't practical. Carolina has lived in VV for most of her life, barring college, which makes her accent somewhat incongruous, but her parents were from Mississippi, so maybe that's it. When she was fourteen years old, her father was found dead, his body in the water off the island, apparently drowned and heavily decomposed. People assumed he was just drunk and fell in. Spoilers: Carolina killed him following years of abuse. She went on to become something of a social nightmare child, but this abated after she went to college and she came back nicer, although she's still kind of rowdy. She is very good with kids/teens, though, maybe because of said rowdiness; her position at the school has sometimes drawn speculative attention because of her rumored personal life.

Her mother and younger sisters (aged 22 and 17) remain on the island. She is paternally a mix of Italian, German, and Sicilian, and maternally almost exclusively indigenous Zapoteca Mexican. It's known that she was previously married, but her husband, something of the quintessential straight-laced type (yeah, they were an odd couple), divorced her when he realized he didn't really know her or her past, and that she wasn't about to tell him the truth.

Basically: charismatic, independent, also kinda really fucked in the head. She does have hands, but also sports some bad scars on her arms. Which she doesn't hide, because she likes to dare people to say anything.

Canon information

Character name and canon: Sir Bellamy Morray | Legends of the Riftwar / The Redemption of Martel (The Elenium AU) ... I am sorry. A little.
Character background: So after our glorious (...ly unfinished) rewrite project, Kay and I made a little crossover through the magic of the nexus and canon world rifts in Baron Ernest Morray's world of origin, leading to the good baron's resurrection and eventual brand new life in Elenia. Because fuck you, that's why. Presented as the totes Elene you guys "cousin" of Lord General Martel, military advisor to the Queen, he took over the royal treasury and married the recently-widowed (Martel and Maryani were happy to help) and scandalously Styric Duchess Teobhan, and a good thing too, because she was already pregnant with bouncing baby Bellamy. For two of the most normal and arguably boring people in the entire goddamn kingdom, the Morrays had an alarmingly bloody courtship. TL;DR, Bellamy Morray became one of the earliest half-allegedly-Elene (his father was, in fact, an Isleman of Midkemia), half-Styric babies to be born into the nobility, which had its ups and downs in a country still heavily defined by the former's prejudice against the latter. I am genuinely sorry that there is not really an easy way to make any of that both succinct and perfectly clear. Anyway, Bellamy grew up with the traditional excess of sass that is required of Eddings characters, eventually joining his older cousin (Nikolaj) in the ranks of Pandion knights largely as a route to practising witchcraft without it being a Thing. Aware of the social mathematics involved in deciding whether or not to hurl eligible noble daughters in his path (heir to a duchy, popularly perceived to be part heathen barn animal and thus does not deserve that duchy), he has avoided that beautiful experience that is matrimony and instead entertains himself with inappropriate and fleeting affairs and the slow realization of his sister's suitors that when he politely declined to threaten them on her behalf because whatever she's about to do to their psyche will be more than sufficient he wasn't kidding. He enjoys pretending to be dumber than he is in really unconvincing ways to sift out the assholes, swinging a giant sword around like a boss, and being an accomplished sorcerer who politely resents being trotted out as a political coffee table conversation piece and/or show pony.

Voidville information

Character's Voidville name: Bel de Norea
Voidville background: Bel is half English, half Italian Romani (the family uses his mother's surname, which is for reasons that have never been explained - although his historically conservatively traditional and straitlaced, somewhat awkward father did once stare him down as to why would it even be questioned so he is assuming There Are Reasons, Ernest probably didn't wake up one day and decide to become super feminist) and trouble on both sides - not that you'd know it to meet his parents these days. Born in England, but relocated to Voidville during his teen years, he pursued a career in law enforcement and is today a detective with the Voidville PD, as well as probably the only Roma cop in New York. Divorced (from Carolina Mendez) he lives alone (except for his cat, Drustan, foisted on him by his uncle after the divorce and under the impression that all space is Drustan-space, including Bel's arse at 4AM and the breasts of any woman he brings home) in a Voidville flat, occupies his time mostly with work and the odd attendance of a poetry reading when the opportunity pops up. Nearsighted, he wears contacts most of the time and glasses around the flat.

With a family that veers between either totally nuts or aggressively normal and boring (as far as you know), he has made a career out of presenting himself as The Sane One, wry and a bit distressingly sincere, laidback and amicable if sometimes a little vague - a serious, well put together man who follows the rules and doesn't get all your jokes. This is total bullshit, FYI. One time he stopped a moving vehicle with his own body by leaping out of a moving car. He is just as crazy, he's only got strong feelings about self-control and maintaining the appearance of appropriate behaviour, etc, etc.

Although he was born into a respectable amount of privilege, he was also born to parents who take 'with great power comes great responsibility' very seriously (thx spiderman) and has never laboured under the idea that he should just lie around being fed grapes by beautiful women, who realistically would probably be petting his slutty cat anyway. He requires occupation, likes puzzles, and if he had a different racial mix he might have been a much more boisterously daft bloke in pursuit of the kind of crazy thrills he enjoys. His dedication to his pristine, slightly upper class good manners and polished mannerisms (ingrained in him by his father) and (as mentioned earlier) appropriate behaviour is not unrelated to the popular, racist depictions and perceptions of Romani people.

Also, he is a keen soccer fan and there is nothing he likes better than watching Italy get their ass handed to them whenever possible. Fuck Italy.

Voidville information

Character's Voidville name: Mara Flemming
Voidville background: Mara lives a little out of the town proper, in rickety old house with her mother (Finola) and 6-month-old daughter (Cinnia). While she is native to the island, she's always been a bit elusive, largely homeschooled and, as a child, prone to showing up with brambles in her hair. These days she's much more particular about her appearance but still a bit strange and secretive. She runs a rather old-fashioned apothecary shop in town in conjuction with Odessa Amsel. As for the baby's father, well -- the less said about him the better, so far as she's concerned.

Canon information

Character name and canon: Randolph Skully from Other Voices, Other Rooms
Character background:

Randolph was born in Skully’s Landing (somewhat morbidly in the same bed his mother would die in), a mansion which sits outside of the small and dilapidated southern town of Noon City; both Noon City and the Landing are entirely surrounded by swamplands, much of it treacherous. Randolph grew up quite wealthy, especially compared to the folks living around him; the house even had a servant by the name of Jesus Fever and, later, when he became sick, his granddaughter Missouri Fever (who went by the name of Zoo). Randolph’s father died when he was young and left him living in the Landing with his mother and his cousin, Amy.

Randolph was educated in the arts and, around the time he turned 20, went abroad, traveling much of Europe, living, as he puts it, mostly in museums. In Madrid he met a woman named Dolores, the first person he claims to have ever loved (he describes her as one of the few people from which he was able to draw vitality), and they began to travel together, first throughout Europe, then to Cuba; they lived there, in a house above the bay of Matanzas for some time. Randolph describes her as something of a gambler and said that each day they would go down to the town to buy lottery tickets or a new guitar (of which Dolores had 30, which she brought with her when she traveled, and all of which she played horribly).

Their lives during this time were idealic, but towards the end of that winter, Randolph found a dream journal that Dolores had been keeping the entire time. In every dream she wrote of pursuing Randolph through the dreamscape, with the intent to kill him (she also wrote previously of killing another lover in her dreams, whom she only referred to as L.) Randolph became somewhat obsessed with the book and found it each day where Dolores had hidden it just to see how much closer she’d come to catching him in her dreams.

After this point, they traveled to America, arriving in Florida, then staying for a time in New York and Philadelphia, before they traveled to New Orleans, where they finally came to rest. (Somewhere around this time, Dolores either ridded herself of the journal or hid it so well that Randolph could never find it no matter how much he searched for it.) It was here they met Pepe Alvarez, a prizefighter, and Ed Samson, his manager. Randolph fell unfortunately in love with Pepe, which was unfortunate both because Pepe fell almost immediately in love with Dolores and also only tolerated Randolph at best. Still Randolph absolutely showered him with gifts. He freely admits knowing that Pepe loathed him, though not enough to ever turn away a gift.

(One night, during this period, Pepe came to the house very drunk, beat Dolores with a belt, pissed on the rug and Randolph’s paintings, and broke Randolph’s nose while calling him any number of horrible things. That night Randolph fled the house and went to Jackson Square; here he met a man who in fact holds the honor of being the first man he ever slept with, but who he never saw again, come morning. And still Randolph could not make himself leave Pepe; he went directly back to the house when he’d left the other man behind.)

On Mardi Gras, the four of them attended a ball; when Randolph could come up with no costume himself, Dolores arrives with a box that contains a Countess’ dress, satin slippers, a green mask and a towering white wig. Randolph took to the experience of dressing as a woman with total delight. That night he even danced with Pepe, who never recognized him in the slightest. (Randolph kept that particular costume and dressed in it routinely, in secret, for years to come.)

In April, Dolores and Pepe suddenly and violently disappeared; Randolph woke to the whole house ransacked and the two of them gone. He had in the moments that followed a kind of psychic break. When Ed ran up to him and started shaking him violently, shouting about Pepe, Randolph, in total panic, suddenly believing himself to be transported into Dolores’ dreams, not recognizing Ed at all except for someone who was pursuing him, ran into his bedroom and pulled out a gun he had hidden. When Ed broke into his room, after him, Randolph shot him, twice. Only after Ed had been hit and fallen down the stairs behind him did Randolph realize where he was and who he’d shot.

Ed lay on a couch in the house, bleeding and moaning and shouting (Randolph claiming there was nothing he could have done for him, though the fact that he admits to loathing Ed makes this rather suspect), until Amy came from the Landing to care for him.

And that is the canon point I am taking him from.

Voidville information

Character's Voidville name: Arlo Beasley
Voidville background: Arlo is an underachieving art student at a community college with a permissive mother and an absentee father—the sort of father who walked out when Arlo was a child and whose only involvement with his life thereafter was the occasional birthday or Christmas card with $20 stuffed in it, which petered off altogether when he was a teenager. As far as Arlo is concerned he doesn’t have a father and never did.

Arlo tends to dabble in many things without particularly excelling in any of them. His interests in art are wide and varied, and he tends to play off his lack of real talent as ironic indifference. He’s also the sort of person who thinks that using a film camera instead of succumbing to digital gives him artistic integrity. He has an obsession with vintage and antique everything.

His mother is disgraced formerly high class woman, a riches to rags story in which she ran off with Arlo’s father as a teenager, despite her family’s vociferous protests, was disowned, had Arlo at 17, was subsequently abandoned by his father, and now works low wage jobs just to make ends meet. Arlo had the occasional brushes with the law through his teens, with charges ranging from petty shoplifting to vandalism to fire setting. He never caused enough damage to get in long term trouble and he’s mostly (at least publicly) straightened out, but the reputation it earned him lingers. His mother fawned over him from childhood, through his troubled teens, and up to the present day.

Arlo’s identifies with the male pronoun but will wear women’s clothes and jewelry as a matter of course. Frankly, he doesn’t care what you think of that.
