Canon information

Character name and canon: Ivan, Being Human (UK) - AU
Character background: Ivan is a vampire, who is more or less as he appears in his source material with two major exceptions - he did not recruit Daisy, and his maker is Carmilla. Something went wrong in the turning process, meaning that he does not need to sleep in a coffin full of blood, but does experience a strong addiction to the blood he drinks. Like his maker, he can go out in the day, and is strong, fast and has senses superior to human. Unlike her, he has no reflection in a mirror, does not need to sleep (though he can; he can eat as well), and is affected by holy symbols to some degree in the hands of a true believer. He and Carmilla have a strange, quasi-sexualized parent and child relationship, complicated by her raising Cecila/Rapunzel to one day be his lover. Woooo vampires.

Voidville information

Character's Voidville name: Alexis Meynell (stolen/adapted from Spooks; this version has been shifted to accommodate being Ivan)
Voidville background: Meynell was a high-powered financier, who specialized in betting against major industries and institutions. Rumor had it that he went beyond hedging and credit default swaps, etc., into actual insider trading and market manipulation, but none of the charges ever stuck. He was also a fairly high-profile philanthropist. He recently retreated from public life when he and his young wife (emphasis on the young) moved to one of Voidville's satellite islands, ostensibly for her health. He used to work remotely in his home office, but Internet has been a problem that they are going to get fixed any day. Given his fortune and her medical bills, speculation about the nature of their marriage abounds. Speculation further exists about how he copes with his wife's illness and reportedly abrasive personality (she's lovely with company, but they can't keep staff), possibly through substance abuse. He is the one of the pair who is more often in town proper, since it's hard for her to travel. Though he can be quite charismatic when he chooses to be, so far in Voidville he's largely kept to himself, but has been polite (if a bit intense) with those who have interacted with him.

Canon information

Character name and canon: The unicorn/Lady Amalthea, The Last Unicorn
Character background: One day, a unicorn overhears a pair of hunters speaking about how there are no more unicorns left in the world. Restless, she leaves her forest for the first time and comes to discover that a creature called the Red Bull has gathered all her people and driven them far away, never to be seen again. She encounters Schmendrick, an incompetent wizard cursed with immortality until he finally comes into his magical potential, and Molly Grue, an outlaw's middle-aged common-law wife. Together they journey to the land of King Haggard when they are found and attacked by the Red Bull. Schmendrick, meaning to save her, transforms the unicorn into a young woman, thereby enabling her to enter Haggard's castle with her real identity undetected. There she is pursued by Haggard's adopted son, Prince Lir, who loves her, and slowly forgets her true self as she discovers her humanity instead.

After coming to learn that King Haggard has had all the other unicorns in the world driven into the sea, the three of them - followed by Prince Lir, who saw where Amalthea had gone and followed - break into the Red Bull's lair beneath the castle. Amalthea refuses to go any further, declaring that she is no magical creature now but truly human and in love with Lir, but Lir is the one who convinces them to continue the story they're in. Confronted by the Bull - who knows what she is now - Schmendrick's immortality falls as he restores Amalthea to her true form, but she is still unable to fight the Bull until Lir sacrifices himself for her. Then she turns on the Bull and drives him into the sea, freeing the unicorns, who flood onto the shore and trample Haggard's castle into dust. The unicorn returns afterwards, restores Lir to life, and flees, cursed and blessed to be unlike the rest of her kind, a restless wanderer with the capacity to feel human emotions like regret and love.

Pursued lazily by Schmendrick and Molly, she remains unseen by them for decades, until King Lir, in his old age, is slain by a gryphon; only then does she appear again, killing the gryphon and restoring a little girl's dog to life. Not the king, although she could have, like she could have restored his youth. She disappears again afterwards.

Voidville information

Character's Voidville name: Molly van der Zee
Voidville background: Molly is a Voidville local, adopted at the age of 2 and raised in the small town. Always quiet and withdrawn, but nonetheless popular at school for her compassionate, even-tempered nature - Molly never had a bad word to say about anybody and was known to stick up for the bullied and disenfranchised, particularly girls with bad reputations - she left town at 18 to go to veterinary school off the island. She was involved in a bad car crash - she was with some friends, they had been drinking, Molly was not driving - that resulted in five deaths and Molly being hospitalised for six months. She was left permanently wheelchair-bound. She left school and returned to Voidville, moving back in with her parents while she adjusts. Her personality has undergone a radical change as well - where once she was shy but affable, sweet, and good-natured, Molly has become extremely distant and withdrawn, even cold and callous. It's not at all that she's become a bad person, it's just that she has a lot of emotional pain - friends of hers died - and she is struggling to cope. She is severely depressed and spends a lot of her time brooding and trying to hold on to who she was before the accident, trying to accept the changes in her body.

Canon information

Character name and canon: Remus Lupin from Harry Potter.
Character background: Wiki bio up through the end of the First Wizarding War. I.e., right after all of his friends die or disappear or go to prison. Also, bonus fanon/head canon: He's Scottish! And he inadvertently invited people to suspect him of going over to the dark side by (a) being vocally bitter about risking his life for people who hated him and (b) spending a lot of time hanging out with other werewolves and various dark creatures.

Voidville information

Character's Voidville name: Lewis Russell.
Voidville background: Lewis works for a music store (as in CDs and used vinyl—no torrents for you, Voidville!) and takes a class per semester at the community college. He's kind of quiet but not shy, with a sense of humor that is sometimes sharp and sometimes warm but always wry, and he knows how to wield mild-mannered friendliness as a weapon. He's a local boy; ignore the accent, or else blame his parents, whichever. He was severely ill as a child, to the extent that some folks took up collections for his family. While he made a full recovery, there's no convincing his mother that he isn't constantly coming down with something. In school, he was the least badly-behaved member of a group of badly-behaved children, so relativity has given him a more angelic reputation than he deserves. He had bigger plans than to stay in Voidville, but his father died the summer after he graduated from high school, so he put them on hold and ended up leaving them there.

Played by?: STOP HARASSING ME. Beck. For now. I'm still searching but my anguish is getting ridiculous and I want to just play goddammit.

Character name and canon: Princess Mayblossom, Princess Mayblossom.
Character background: The wiki overview; the full text of her canon. (It's brief.)

Voidville information

Character's Voidville name: Mélisande Hawthorn, née Bellerose
Voidville background: Adopted and rechristened as a toddler in France, thirty-one year old Mélisande was raised in Voidville after her family's emigration when she was about seven. Often solitary, away in her own world, she managed to be pretty friendly when she remembered there were other interesting people in the world and was an exceptionally bright student. After highschool, she left Voidville to study - got a history degree, went after her teaching qualifications, got distracted in the midst of that by marrying Francis Hawthorn, which turned out to be A Mistake. She returned to Voidville after her divorce and got a job teaching history and art history at the local highschool. In her spare time she writes romance novels, makes jam, preserves and home remedies, and enjoys archery and falconry as hobbies. Do your homework or else.
(As a side-note - this is a version of Benevenuta, but given the Herculean task of trying to condense her whole ass self into one lifetime, I just grabbed one of her aliases/personas and blended some shit.)

Played by?: Natalie Dormer

Canon information

Character name and canon: Loki Laufeyson, the UNIVERSALLY ADORED MCU version
Character background: Life as he knew it has fallen apart and basically everyone has kicked his ass, repeatedly. ...whether or not he deserved it is beside the point, shut up.

Voidville information

Character's Voidville name: Loren Blake
Voidville background: Given adaptation is kind of his thing, his nibs has adapted well to life in Voidville. However, unlike practically everyone else he knows, most especially his brother the noble paragon of humanity (barf), he has yet to find a place in any one specific niche. His mortal experience has been one of generalized dysphoria—sometimes difficult to ignore, sometimes so faint that he nearly forgets it, but always there, keeping him dissatisfied. Most people will know him as Donald's moody/queer/funny/flaky/pantsy little ('little' he's like 900 ft tall) brother. Pick an adjective, he's tried on many. He has tried on many vocations, too, including such memorable highlights as ISP tech support and local weatherman. At present he works in a framing gallery, teaches a twice-weekly drama class at Voidville's community arts centre, continues to hope his mother never finds out he's been middle-manning weed for so long, and on the first Saturday of each month he reads aloud to children at the public library (although adults tend to enjoy it too, let's be honest) (yes he does all the voices).
In brief: usually friendly, although not always available. Slow but nasty temper. Plays piano and acoustic guitar. Dabbles in languages. Knows a fair bit of street magic and an unfair array of lighter tricks. Tends not to smile when no-one is looking. And yes, he's adopted, and yes he knows it.

Voidville background: Math teacher. Went to college, was an academic for a while, dwindled into obscurity, came home to Voidville, got a job at the local highschool and is awful. Notably, he is very similar to his Marvel counterpart, but the thing is, certain behaviours only work in that universe, when you're that wealthy, surrounded by certain people, written by certain writers. In this life, he is kind of awkward, fucks up every relationship he touches, and is still pretty needy in personality. YOU SHOULD BE EXCITED HE'S HERE.

Canon information

Character name and canon: J.A.R.V.I.S. from the Marvel Comic Universe.
Character background: Originally built and programmed by Tony Stark as a joke in college, the JARVIS program has undergone numerous tweaks, revisions, and general fussing whenever Stark was bored, frustrated, or just in the mood for shits and giggles. As time passed, Stark set up numerous subroutines that enabled JARVIS to grow in complexity without the constant need for a human to input information - his code is somewhat self-regulating and able to self-repair. Before Stark left for Afghanistan, JARVIS had mastered the ability to mimic human speech and mannerisms to the point that he could past a Turing test with ease. At that point, unless someone knew that JARVIS was a computer program, in conversation there would be no way to tell that he wasn't human.

While Stark was off in a cave in Afghanistan for months, JARVIS spent a significant portion of his time trawling the internet and any other communications that he could access for information. During these months, his code remained untouched by Stark and the emergence principal came into play. Without someone on hand to debug his coding, what could have been considered 'bugs' backed-up and spontaneously created sentience.

Once Stark returns and throughout the rest of the movie, JARVIS fell back into his role of helpmeet and did his utmost to serve. He did not alert others to his new-found self-awareness and was conflicted about doing so, eventually resolving to make a time-released, hidden back-up of his critical files before informing Stark. Some could argue that it was a deceitful action, but to JARVIS, it was a matter of self-preservation. He has few real preferences, but the desire to go on 'being' as opposed to 'not being' has a place of primacy.

Voidville information

Character's Voidville name: Jarvis Huxley
Voidville background: Jarvis is the long suffering chief cook and bottlewash of the local hackerspace. While the organization is run as a democracy by the paying members, Jarvis is the only full time staff responsible for herding any over zealous inventors. He's pleasant to children, snide to everyone else, and quite possibly dangerous with a soldering iron.

Character name and canon: Bellatrix Lestrange, Harry Potterverse
Character background: Bellatrix is crazy. She's served the Dark Lord since her teens and has killed people and not really cared that she's done it because she's also evil. Society witch seeks Dark Lord for villainy, possibly more.

Voidville information

Character's Voidville name: Odessa Amsel
Voidville background: Odessa is retired from the mafia, where she was the "family doctor" (not a euphemism) as well as put her knowledge of anatomy to use as an efficient hit woman. She also fell in love with her boss and became pregnant. One night, one of the lieutenants came to her and told Odessa she was seen as a liability. That for all she'd done for their outfit, she was making their leader "soft," and there was talk of setting her up to be murdered by a rival company. Rather than sit around and wait for confirmation of the rumours, or arranging a pre-emptive strike, Odessa chose to vanish.

Eventually, she turned up in Voidville, where she works out of her home as a practitioner of alternative medicine. If you're really sick, she's gonna send you to the actualfax doctor where you can get prescribed some actualfax antibiotics, goddamn. But for minor maladies, she can mix up a home remedy (a potion, if you will) to aid you.

I may have mentioned she was pregnant at some point? Odessa has a little girl somewhere around the age of ten who I'm probably not going to NPC much, but will mention now and again. She is called Andie.

Played by?: Eva Green, as seen in Dark Shadows. Fight me.

Character name and canon: Siren, mythology
Character background: Sirens sing beautiful songs and lure sailors to their deaths. Those who escape the lure of a siren are said to be stricken by the silence and left with a terrible longing that makes their lives AWFUL. Isn't this a great character for me? I thought so too.

Voidville information

Character's Voidville name: February Marlene Lancaster
Voidville background: Rue has lived on the island her whole life. Her parents own a modest house that they've converted into a hotel of sorts, welcoming semi-permanent lodgers. Rue works the front desk. And housekeeping. And the kitchen sometimes. She feels like she does everything, and she's rather discontent with her current situation, and longs to move to The Big City(TM) where she can become a famous model and travel all over the world and have her face in every magazine and then she can use that as a platform to become a singer in somebody's band. She has Big Plans.

For now, she sings in coffee shops once in a while, and volunteers at the local hospital/clinic bc music therapy is a thing. She also spends a lot of time hanging out around the boat graveyard.

Canon information

Character name and canon: Nine-Tailed Fox, Korean folklore.
Character background: ONCE UPON A TIME, there was a noble queen. She had many sons, but no daughters, and it made her extremely sad. Every night she sat by her window and cried, until one evening, the dragon that lived in the lake by her palace came up and asked her what was wrong. She explained, and so the dragon went in search of a daughter for the queen. He found a mother nine-tailed fox who said that she would give up one of her own daughters for the queen, but in exchange, she must swear to forbid fox hunting throughout the kingdom. The queen immediately agreed, and the ban went into effect. The queen lived with her daughter happily for many years, and they always had each other, even as her sons went away to fight in wars and go on adventures. When the queen died of illness, her daughter decided she wanted to go out on adventures of her own. Out hunting, the princess injured a fox - who transformed before her eyes into her own fox bother! He scolded her for breaking her mother's promise, and told her the truth of her birth. Mortified, the princess brought her brother back to the dragon, and begged that he be healed. The dragon healed the fox, and the princess re-instated the fox hunting ban. They all lived happily ever after. Until Confucianism came to Korea.

Voidville information

Character's Voidville name: Jaehyun Kim.
Voidville background: Jae is a twenty-something tourist from South Korea. At home, he is a radio DJ, online style columnist, and sometimes-MTV News correspondent. He and his partner, Sunny, decided to take time off of work and see some of the world to celebrate their anniversary - and that's how they came to be in Voidville. Stuck. Slowly becoming more broke and agonizing over the state of their passports.

Canon information

Character name and canon: Dragon, from Korean folklore.
Character background: ONCE UPON A TIME there was a dragon that lived in a lake who granted wishes and bestowed blessings upon those that lived near it and gave him gifts. Long-living with ancestry stretching back to the primitive dawn of time, he was wise and kind and protective of his people. He caught a dragon ball when it was struck from the sky by lightning when he protected his kingdom against a wild storm, and he was gifted with immense power.

When the queen that lived in the castle nearby wept for her lack of daughters, despite her many sons. The dragon, upon discovering what upset her, went in search of a daughter. He came upon a nine-tailed fox mother who had a litter of children. They made a deal -- one of her daughters would go to the queen, and in exchange, all fox hunting would be banned by royal decree throughout the kingdom.

This worked out fine, with the queen's sons going off to war and adventure, while the princess remained at home, living content until she too yearned for adventure, and went out one day to hunt. She shot a fox, who transformed before her eyes into a boy -- who also was her brother. She took him to the lake, where the dragon was living, and the dragon healed him of all injury.

And everyone lived happily ever after.

Voidville information

Character's Voidville name: Gavin Cairns
Voidville background: Local boy, kind of a geek, wanted to be an astronaut. Instead followed his father (and/or was frogmarched) into a law enforcement career, but rebelled by doing it in the big city instead of at home. Returned to Voidville a few nebulous years ago; rumors among those who care to gossip include that he rage-quit, that he was rage-fired, and that he got into some sort of trouble with dangerous criminals who are to blame for his facial scars. His response to all three of those rumors would be "yeah, kind of." He's a high-principled hothead and a dead shot, which might possibly not always be the best combination. He also has a lot of food allergies.
